Overview
In this tour we explore the story of the big storm of 1953 that hit the South-West of the Netherlands. The dykes which had been neglected in WW2 broke and large parts were flooded. Almost 2000 people died and the damage was extensive. After the flood the Delta Works prevent a disaster from happening again. We visit the iconic places including the Flood Museum housed in the caissons that were used to close the biggest gap. 10-11 hours tour duration is travel time included.

After a 1,5 hours drive from Amsterdam we arrive at the cemetery of Oude Tonge. This village was hardest hit during the flood of 1953. The 305 victims were buried in the dyke. The only dry place available. Looking at the names and ages on the graves we are humbled by the impact of the flood and the strength of nature..
⏱ 2 hours - 2
The last gap was closed in November 1953 at Ouwerkerk. Four Phoenix caissons were used. Those are the same type as the ones used for the D-Day harbour in Arromanches, Normandy. Now the caissons house the museum creating a special atmosphere for your visit. Admission € 13,50 p.p.
⏱ 2 hours - 3
In the city of Zierikzee we stroll around and enjoy our lunch break. The Medieval gate and city wall testify of its ancient origins. In the Golden Age Zierikzee was a rich and powerful trading city. It still shows, even though the city was flooded in 1953.
⏱ 2 hours - 4
On our way to the Oosterschelde Storm Barrier we make a short stop in the typical Zeeland village of Colijnsplaat. In that fatal night in 1953 the flood gate was about to break. Putting their shoulders into it the villagers prevented collapse. But they were tiring. At the end of their strength a miracle happened that saved the village.
⏱ 1 hour - 5
From Work island Neeltje Jans we have a good view on the Oosterschelde Storm Barrier. With 62 vertical doors it can be closed to protect the Oosterschelde estuary. Normally it is open so the unique natural qualities of the area are preserved. A visit to Deltapark Neeltje Jans is NOT included in this program.
