Wat Phra Si Sanphet was located inside the compound of the Grand Palace (the foundations of which are still visible) and served as the Royal Chapel. In Ayutthaya's heyday, this was the largest temple in the city. The three main chedis which have been restored contain the ashes of three Ayutthaya kings.

Wat Mahathat was one of Ayutthaya’s most important temples. It enshrined Buddha relics and was the seat of the Supreme Patriarch of Buddhism and thus the center of Buddhism in the Ayutthaya Kingdom. One of the temple’s most photographed objects is the head of a stone Buddha image entwined in the roots of a tree.

Although Wat Lokayasutharam is not one of the most famous historic sites in Ayutthaya, it is an impressive location to visit because of its huge reclining Buddha image. At 42 metres long and 8 metres high, the statue towers over the devotees who come here to make offerings.
