We pass by 2 highlights related with keeping The Netherlands dry; a 19th century huge pump and a recently built temporal movable dam which is only closed in case of high sea levels in combination with storms.

   One of the pumps that was used for pumping one of the largest lakes in The Netherlands dry in the 1800''s. It still works.

   This massive movable waterworks protects the area around Rotterdam against flooding in case of extremely high sea levels & storms. It's usually open, but is automatically closed in case water levels and weather circumstances might cause floods. It's under normal circumstances open because it's the main connections from inland waterways like the river Rhine to the sea port of Rotterdam.
