Here is something most travel guides do not tell you: the best part of Gardens by the Bay is completely free. The Supertree Grove - 18 tree-like structures up to 50 meters tall covered in tropical plants and light installations - costs nothing to walk through. The free evening light show at 7:45pm and 8:45pm runs 15 minutes and is one of the best free experiences in Southeast Asia. The paid attractions (Flower Dome + Cloud Forest combo: SGD 30) are genuinely worth it, but you should understand what you are paying for versus what you get for free before you book.

Getting to Gardens by the Bay
Gardens by the Bay sits on reclaimed land in Marina Bay, directly adjacent to Marina Bay Sands. Three MRT lines stop nearby.
| From | MRT Line | Station | Walk Time |
|---|---|---|---|
| City Hall / Raffles Place area | EWL/NSL | Bayfront (CE1) | 8-10 min |
| Chinatown / Clarke Quay | CCL | Bayfront (CE1) | 8-10 min |
| Orchard Road area | NSL | Marina Bay (NS27) | 15 min |
| Changi Airport | EWL | Bayfront via Tanah Merah | 45 min total |
Exit at Bayfront MRT and follow signs to Gardens by the Bay - the path goes through the Marina Bay Sands shopping mall. There is no entrance fee to the outdoor gardens. The Flower Dome and Cloud Forest conservatories each require a separate paid ticket.
When Is the Best Time to Visit Gardens by the Bay?
Visit on a weekday evening. The Supertree Grove light show runs at 7:45pm and 8:45pm daily and crowds peak on weekends and public holidays. Arriving at 6pm means you can walk the free outdoor areas in lower heat, watch the sunset behind the city skyline, then catch the light show. The conservatories (Flower Dome and Cloud Forest) are air-conditioned - good options for the hottest parts of the day (12-4pm).
Singapore is equatorial so there is no true off-season. December and January bring slightly cooler evenings (26-29°C versus 30-33°C). School holiday periods (June, November-December) are the most crowded. Avoid Saturday evenings at the Supertree Grove if you can.
Free vs Paid: What Is Actually Worth Your Money
Supertree Grove (Free)
The 18 Supertrees are the defining image of Gardens by the Bay. Free to walk through at any time. The OCBC Skyway aerial walkway connects two of the largest Supertrees at 22 meters above the ground - this costs SGD 14 for adults and is genuinely optional. The ground-level experience is almost as good. Go at sunset for the best light.
Cloud Forest (Paid - SGD 28 alone, or SGD 30 combo with Flower Dome)
The Cloud Forest is a 35-meter tall mountain covered in tropical plants inside a glass dome, with the world's tallest indoor waterfall (35 meters) at its center. Take the lift to the top and walk down through different climate zones. This is the better of the two conservatories - the scale, the waterfall, and the living mountain effect are genuinely impressive. Allow 45-60 minutes. Closes at 9pm, last entry 8pm.
Flower Dome (Paid - SGD 14 alone, or SGD 30 combo)
The Flower Dome is a cooler, drier climate conservatory with flowers and plants from the Mediterranean and semi-arid regions. It is beautiful but more conventional than Cloud Forest. The floral displays change with the season. Allow 30-40 minutes. Worth doing if you have the combo ticket but probably not worth SGD 14 as a standalone visit unless you are specifically interested in horticulture.
Floral Fantasy (Paid - SGD 23.79)
Floral Fantasy opened in 2019 and features four garden habitats with suspended floral displays and a 4D ride experience. Honestly, this is the weakest of the three paid attractions - the fantasy aesthetic is heavily Instagram-oriented rather than botanically interesting. Skip it unless you specifically want it.
The Free Outdoor Gardens
Beyond the Supertrees, the outdoor gardens include the Indian Garden, Chinese Garden, Malay Garden, Colonial Garden, and the Dragonfly and Kingfisher lakes. All free. The Heritage Gardens section is particularly good in the early morning with fewer people. Plan 60-90 minutes for a proper outdoor walk.
Where to Stay Near Gardens by the Bay
- Marina Bay Sands: On-site luxury. Rates from SGD 500-900+/night. Infinity pool with the iconic skyline view. Worth it once if budget allows.
- Parkroyal Collection Marina Bay: Mid-range, walking distance. Rates SGD 280-450/night. Excellent infinity pool.
- Chinatown / Tanjong Pagar hotels: 10-15 min by MRT, SGD 80-200/night. Best value for Gardens day trips.
- Sentosa hotels: 20 min by MRT, SGD 200-400/night. Good if combining with USS or Sentosa beach days.

| Full bundle (all 3 paid) | SGD 60 | Everything | Half day |
| Evening only (free) | Free | Supertrees + light show | 2 hours |
The Cloud Forest + Flower Dome combo at SGD 30 is the right call for most visitors. It adds the best conservatory experience without overpaying for Floral Fantasy. If you are on a strict budget, the free outdoor evening experience with the light show is genuinely excellent on its own.
Practical Tips Before You Visit
Light show timing: The Garden Rhapsody light show runs at 7:45pm and 8:45pm every night. The 8:45pm show is slightly less crowded. Arrive 10 minutes early for a good spot near the central path between the Supertrees.
Dress code: No formal requirements. But the conservatories are air-conditioned (18-23°C in Cloud Forest). A light jacket or long sleeves makes the visit more comfortable.
Tickets: Buy online to save SGD 2-3 per person and skip the gate queue. The Klook price is typically the best available.
My Honest Take on Gardens by the Bay
Gardens by the Bay is a legitimate world-class attraction - the scale and quality of the conservatories justify Singapore's claim to it. The Cloud Forest specifically is unlike anything else you will find in Southeast Asia. The free outdoor experience with the light show is one of the better free things you can do in any city in the region. The honest downside: Floral Fantasy is overpriced and Flower Dome is underwhelming compared to Cloud Forest. Spend your money on the Cloud Forest + Flower Dome combo and save the Floral Fantasy budget for a good hawker meal after.
